The Temptation of St. Anthony
Support |
Dimensions: | 22.3 x 34.6 cm |
Cut edge: | The left-center bottom edge (8G) shifted upward at some point during treatment (due to extensive loss/fracture), causing the bottom edge to be uneven across the sheet; formerly the sheet had a uniform bottom edge (See BT image)
Paper type: | Ivory wove paper, discolored to tan |
Pinholes: | Top corners |
Additional notes: | ULC pinhole, extends below through bottom edge of 7G LLC sheet; URC pinhole, has an absence of media across entire corner and corresponds through 8I ULC
Sewing holes: | Vertically through center, 7.0 cm and 15.4 cm (?) from top edge
Edges overlapping adj. sheet: | Top edge (right, 5mm); Left edge |
Edges extending below adj. sheet: | Right edge (slightly) |
Edges abutting adj. sheet: | — |
Media |
Colored pencil: | Black pencil is used to define the overall composition; applied prior to laying down color media; there are two different densities of black pencil
A darker black pencil is used in the center left to define the creature’s eye and arm; at the URC; and in the center right to create the fish’s scales and figure’s fingernails; the black pencil is drawn over most other media, including colored pencil and white gouache and over some red watercolor, but not in all cases
| Greenish blue pencil was applied at the left side in the creature; and in the center and upper right corner in the skeleton’s arm
| Dark blue pencil was used at the left to highlight the creature’s face and body; in the center in the fish; and possibly in the lower right corner in the figure’s sleeve
| Reddish-orange pencil was applied generally overall in the faces, hands and background flames
| Bright yellow pencil in upper right area and the upper center in the skeleton’s waistband; similar to that across row 8
Graphite: | Graphite is visible below the black pencil in the center area, particularly in the upper center face
Pastel: | Bright blue pastel (ultramarine/indigo) similar to that in the sky was applied in the LRC, over the black pencil
Watercolor: | White gouache is used at the upper center left side to highlight the creatures tongue, teeth and eye in the upper left quadrant; in the upper center figure’s neck; and in the fingernails and fish’s mouth and eyes at the center right side
| Red watercolor, possibly two different types, is applied over the black and colored pencil. A dark brownish-red watercolor is applied in the creature’s mouth and eye in the upper left quadrant; both a bright red gouache and brownish red watercolor are applied at the center right side in the hand/fingers and fish’s mouth and eyes, as well as generally through the upper right quadrant in the skeleton’s clothing
Also in the center in the fingers the white and red watercolor appear to be combined to form a pink wash
| Possibly a light grayish tan watercolor wash overall, most noticeable in the URC where it is absent along the overlapped edge; extends across into 8I
Scratching: | — |
Additional media notes: | A thick greenish blue paint/pencil is used to highlight the creature’s fins/scales;
Thick light orange paint/pencil in lower center left area, below the fish tail (flames?), and upper center in figure’s head; similar to that in 8A-D/elsewhere in row 8
Greenish blue pencil visible along center bottom edge could correspond with media used to color canvas margin
Composition |
Drawing to sheet edges: | Media extends to all edges except the right top edge |
Drawing into adjacent sheet: | Difficult to assess at left side due to 8F restoration fill;
The composition related very closely above, with the exception of one drawn line at the center top that is shifted slightly to the left when edges were joined
Compositional changes/additions: | The small horn in the URC appears to have been added later, over colored pencil
Could the center face drawn in graphite could be an early drawing incorporated into the composition?
