Drawing Sheet 4-I

Figure Content:

The Temptation of St. Anthony

Sheet Location 4 I

Physical Description

Support

Dimensions:

22.4 x 16.6 cm

Cut edge:

Possibly left

Paper type:

Ivory wove paper, discolored to tan

Pinholes:

Center top edge (3); possibly right top edge (1); LRC (1)

    Additional notes:

Pinhole in LRC corresponds to a dot of media below in 5I, when edges are overlapped; the pinhole does not appear to pass through overlapping edges; Unusual large hole at lower left edge

Sewing holes:

Unclear

Edges overlapping adj. sheet:

Bottom edge (4mm)

Edges extending below adj. sheet:

Left (7mm); top (3mm);

Edges abutting adj. sheet:

Media

Colored pencil:

Black pencil is used to define the overall composition.

Red pencil is applied over the black pencil in the figure’s faces and the column strips along the right side; in the figure’s bodies and swords below and in figure at upper left; red media does not extend below overlap at left edge

Blue pencil is applied over the black pencil in the horizontal stripes at the left side and in the wave-like image in the center-right

Yellow pencil is used in the flame/wave like images below

Purplish blue pencil is present at the upper left edge of sheet, below overlapping edge, and does not correspond across to 4H

Graphite:

Watercolor:

Red gouache is applied over the black pencil in the upper left area in the figure’s shoes and stave; there is some loss of red medium due to lack of adhesion to the black pencil below.

Scratching:

Additional media notes:

Similar black pencil used below in 5I, though the lines in general do not correspond across sheets; color medium does not correspond directly below when the edges are overlapped

Technical Notes

Composition

Drawing to sheet edges:

All edges; some absence of color pencil at far left edge

Drawing into adjacent sheet:

One black pencil line at right bottom edge extends ijnto 5I, when edges are abutted; **Color pencil does not directly correspond to 5I, but abruptly ends at overlapping edge;

One black line extends directly into at center left edge 4H, though the red and blue pencil extend directly across to 4H

The figure’s stave and shield are extended above in 3I; the column capital in the URC corresponds above in 3I; red media extend over overlapping join into 3I

Compositional changes/additions:

The composition was reworked (figure’s stave and shield) after shifting the sheet and creating more of an overlap (refer to image) along left edge to unite with 3I (does this infer that 3I was put down before 4I?); additionally, the drawing extends of the paper sheet onto the canvas in black pencil, possibly to extend the drawing to align with 3I

Some areas are worked over (no changes made), creating parallel lines in some areas; all lines were created in black pencil
