Media

Colored pencil:

Black pencil is used to define the overall composition; applied prior to laying down color media; a denser/darker black pencil was applied over some pre-existing black pencil lines, to strengthen

Greenish-blue pencil is applied to the lower ground layer overall and at the upper left corner

A thicker greenish blue thick pencil/paint (caked/piled) at left side/edge; extends into 8B

Dark blue pencil is applied in the upper and lower center area in the beggar’s wrap/sign (?), in the upper right corner area in St. Anthony’s cloak, and possibly within the greenish blue pencil at the bottom

Bright thick blue pencil is applied in the bird at upper center

Yellow pencil is applied through the upper center in the beggar’s sign, and in the upper left area

Purplish-blue pencil at upper and center left side (?)

Traces of brownish red pencil applied at the upper-center left side in the boar face and back, in figure’s hand, and in fish’s face

Graphite:

Possibly some traces of graphite at the center left side in the black passage and in the face of the boar

Pastel:

Watercolor:

Light purplish gray gouache was applied over pencil media to create patch as in 8E

Scratching:

Possibly some traces of scratching in the boar’s head

Additional media notes:

A thicker greenish blue thick pencil/paint (caked/piled) at left side/edge; extends into 8B

Traces of light thick orange-yellow paint/pencil, as seen in 8A-B, is used at the lower left side

The greenish-blue pencil at the center bottom area may have picked up some of the adhesive texture/pattern formerly used to mount the drawing—there is little evidence of the pattern on the verso

Technical Notes

Composition

Drawing to sheet edges:

Media extends to all edges

Drawing into adjacent sheet:

A few drawn black pencil lines appear to extend over to 8B along the right edge, esp. in the figure’s neck, pitch fork handle and just below (?), as well as in the leg and clawed foot; colored pencil corresponds generally well

The colored pencil generally relates across to 8E

Compositional changes/additions:

Gouache applied over media on pocket; perhaps later addition correlating with other later watercolor additions

Words at lower center drawn over in some areas with a darker black pencil
