Media

Colored pencil:

Black pencil is used to define the overall composition; applied prior to laying down color media.

Blue pencil is used in the upper center in the buildings pediment and at the LLC in the water, and in the center figure’s nose and chest

Purplish blue pencil applied in the architectural columns and decorative elements in the right half of the sheet

Yellow pencil is applied throughout the right half of the sheet in the architectural details and stars

Orange-red pencil is applied through the center in the building frieze (?), the figure’s feathered headdress, face, hand, robe (blood?) and stave, as well as in the fish’s eye and mermaid’s body at the left side and architectural elements at the far right; the media is thickly applied to form rays emanating from the figure’s halo (?), extending above in 2I

Graphite:

Some traces in the upper area in the figures on the roof; difficult to confirm

Watercolor:

Red watercolor is used to highlight the center figure’s stave, applied over the black pencil lines

Scratching:

Additional media notes:

There may be charcoal in the URC, causing the area to look smudged?

Technical Notes

Composition

Drawing to sheet edges:

All edges

Drawing into adjacent sheet:

The figure’s stave and shield are extended below in 4I; the column capital in the LRC corresponds below in 3I

Composition at center and URC relate to that in 2H-I, but no lines extend directly across the sheets; orange-red pencil/conte crayon media at center top edge is used above

Composition at lower left extends across into 3F

Compositional changes/additions:

Figures on roof at upper center-left are reworked/strengthened in a darker black pencil

Clouds at the upper left are drawn over sun below; and sphinx (?) appears to have been drawn over early pointed cap atop architectural column
