Media

Colored pencil:

Two densities of black pencil are used to create the overall composition: a lighter pencil is used overall to define the composition over which colored pencil is applied; and then a darker pencil is used selectively to add lines and compositional elements (visual devices?) along the bottom edge and appears to be applied over the colored pencil

Orange-red pencil is used to color the balloon and in some of the rays

Yellow pencil is used in the light rays, below the yellow pastel additions

Greenish blue pencil is used to tone the cross-hatched rays

Blue pencil may be used in the sky, most visible along the top edge that was preserved below the join

Pastel:

Blue pastel is used in the sky and appears to be applied over blue pencil

Yellow pastel is applied to the sky appears to be placed over the yellow pencil

Graphite:

Graphite is visible irregularly in the cross-hatches rays (noted in green on image)

Watercolor:

Yellow gouache is applied in a small passage in the sunray at the upper right

Scratching:

Additional media notes:

There is a grayish white media, possibly pastel in the lower center area—possibly applied by restorer to hide damaged areas

Technical Notes

Composition

Drawing to sheet edges:

Colored pencil lines extend to the edges; pastel passages do not extend to the edges

Drawing into adjacent sheet:

*Composition extends over all edges to adjacent sheets when edges are overlapped/joined

Compositional changes/additions:

The pastel used to enhance the sky appears to have been added after the sheet edges were joined

Artist’s patches:

Former restoration:

Possibly overpaint with pastel to hide damaged areas in center bottom area
