Support |
|
Dimensions: | 22.5 x 34.2 cm |
Cut edge: | — |
Paper type: | Ivory wove paper, discolored to tan |
Pinholes: | LLC, corresponds above to pinhole in ULC of 8G when edges are overlapped
|
Additional notes: |
|
Sewing holes: | Vertically through center at 7.9 and 16.6 cm from top edge (possibly also pinholes?)
|
Edges overlapping adj. sheet: | Top edge |
Edges extending below adj. sheet: | Upper right edge and bottom edge |
Edges abutting adj. sheet: | Right edge |
Media |
|
Colored pencil: | Black pencil is used to define the overall composition; applied prior to laying down color media; there are two different densities of black pencil
Some dark black pencil lines are drawn over colored pencil
|
| Greenish blue pencil is applied overall to tone the fish, creatures and skeleton and grotesque figures
|
| Dark orange-red pencil was used at the left side to depict the streaming blood; LLC in the crab claw and fish’s mouth; at the center top edge in the figure’s pants; in the lower center area (?); and generally in the skin tone
|
| Dark blue pencil is used in creature at the center left side; in the skeleton in center-right bottom edge
|
| Yellow pencil at the center top edge in the figure’s legs
|
Graphite: | — |
Charcoal/chalk: | Charcoal may have been used to create some of the light lines in the pregnant female figures; some lines appear smudged under magnification; perhaps the use of charcoal contributed to tonal shading;
|
Pastel: | Possibly traces of the greenish blue paste in the URC |
Watercolor: | — |
Scratching: | — |
Additional media notes: | Possibly a light gray wash or tonal charcoal shading overall |
Composition |
|
Drawing to sheet edges: | Media extends to all edges except the right top edge |
Drawing into adjacent sheet: | The center top figure’s legs that extend directly into 6H; otherwise few lines correspond above
Area of loss extends most of right edge; green pencil at the upper right side and dark black pencil lines defining the tail of the bird at the upper center right side extend across into 7I
The composition along the left and center bottom edge related very closely below, with the exception of one drawn line at the center bottom that is shifted slightly to the right when edges were joined
|
Compositional changes/additions: | — |
Artist’s patches: | The nude reclining female figure at center left edge was covered by a brown paper patch in two section cut in the shape of a fish and to cover the figure with black pencil and touches of white gouache
The nude female figure’s head and the above figure’s legs at the upper center left area were covered by a circular dog/pug face patch that was drawn in black pencil/charcoal and dark orange red pencil with some light diagonal scratching; The figure’s behind displaying urination/defecation is also covered by a separate brown paper oblong-shaped patch with traces of white gouache
The nude pregnant female figure’s body in the center area was covered by a brown paper patch cut to the shape of the figure with touches of white and light greenish blue gouache and black pencil
The nude pregnant female’s figure at the right side (birthing a bird-like creature) was covered by a brown paper patch cut to the shape of the figure with black pencil and touches of white and light greenish blue gouache; the former restoration fill extended over the original paper support, covering/masking the drawing to unite with the artist’s paper patch
|
Former restoration: | There is a large 13 x 10.7 cm large ‘J’ shaped loss that was formerly restored at the lower right side and corner; the fill partially covered original support and drawing to connect to the artist’s patch
