The Temptation of St. Anthony
Support |
Dimensions: | 22.5 x 33.7 cm |
Cut edge: | — |
Paper type: | Ivory wove paper, discolored to tan |
Pinholes: | TLC, below overlapping/joined edges (does not correspond to overlapping sheet above—pinhole made prior to joining); TRC (2x); and possibly LLC
Additional notes: | Media extends into pinhole |
Sewing holes: | Through center vertically, 8.0 and 16.5cm from the top edge
Edges overlapping adj. sheet: | — |
Edges extending below adj. sheet: | Bottom (7mm) and top (5mm) |
Edges abutting adj. sheet: | Left and right edges |
Media |
Colored pencil: | Black pencil is used to define the overall composition; different densities of pencil appear to have been used; also possibly dark black pencil used over graphite or lighter black pencil (difficult to assess in all cases); colored pencil is generally applied over black pencil
| Greenish-blue pencil is used (in most cases) in clothing, smoke and dead bodies/faces; there is an absence of blue pencil below the join at right top edge
| Green pencil is used (in most cases) in the upper right corner in the dragon (does not continue over to 5I) and in some clothing at center
| Purple-blue pencil is used (in most cases) in the center area in the clothing
| Yellow pencil is used (in most cases) in the clothing and hair
| Reddish-orange pencil is used to render blood, knives, accentuated faces, and legs/stockings; Orange-red pastel/conte crayon is used over the black pencil (in most cases) in face at lower right
Graphite: | Possibly used throughout in figures (absent in large face at left top edge), and reworked in black pencil most visible in dragons at center top and URC
Watercolor: | Red watercolor added, over pencil, at left and center to render blood, knives accentuated faces and the burning stake. This media extends upward into 4G and downward into 6G, applied over the paper join
Scratching: | Some scratching in the center figure’s face of 5H (eyes and mouth)
Additional media notes: | Some darker black pencil were added later over the color pencil, perhaps to strengthen lines There are incised lines overall, possibly due to black pencil with high binder ratio
Composition |
Drawing to sheet edges: | Drawing extends to all edges |
Drawing into adjacent sheet: | Composition extends over to 5F, a few drawn lines extend over edges at lower left edge, in faces Drawing corresponds above, artificial connection (no direct lines extend and sheet must be overlapped to connect imagery)
Black pencil lines extend over into 5I in some areas, though not overall. **Color pencil does not correspond to 5I, but abruptly ends at edge. Dark black pencil lines extend in limited area into adj. sheet to complete back of dragon, extending figure (legs/tail) abruptly ends at right edge; possibly a visual device. Figure at lower center right edge extends into 5I in lighter black pencil
Composition extends below in tuba/instrument and ‘harp’ (?) when edges are abutted or overlapped (no direct connection of drawn lines—except when the sheets edges are moved to connect lines below overlapping join)
Composition extends in the large face at upper left top when edges are abutted; center top dragon/bird-like creature is continued above in 4G, though only dark black pencil is used to continue the form above; perhaps acting as a visual linking device
Compositional changes/additions: | The grid-like cylinder in the LRC of 5H, appears to have been drawn in darker black pencil over pre-existing drawing, perhaps as a visual link to connect sheet below
Artist’s patches: | A small patch covered the far left figure’s genitals |
