Media

Colored pencil:

Black pencil is used to define the overall composition; there are two different densities of black pencil (one possibly Conté crayon).

Blue pencil is applied over the black pencil in the upper area of smoke and lightly applied in figures; also at bottom in center

Red pencil is applied over the black pencil in the lower left corner figure’s face/mask

Graphite:

Graphite lines are scattered throughout image; some are applied over black pencil lines

Scratching:

At center right in skull

Additional media notes:

Purpose of the graphite is unclear in some instances

Technical Notes

Composition

Drawing to sheet edges:

All visible edges

Drawing into adjacent sheet:

The composition does extend upward, though drawn lines do not precisely extend above into 4D (perhaps one skull overlaps edges) and the media changes from black pencil to graphite

One drawn black line appears to extend from figure in LLC into 6D, otherwise medium and composition appears slightly disconnected

Compositional changes/additions:

Artist’s patches:

Small patch applied in center over female’s genitalia

Former restoration:

Fills in LLC, right half of bottom edge and lower half of right edge (all overlap recto)

Drawing on verso:

Additional observations:

Skulls at URC are executed in black pencil; the skulls are continued in this medium in 4D, though the handling is somewhat different
