Media

Colored pencil:

Black pencil is used to define the overall composition; there are two different densities of black medium (one possible conté crayon), possibly applied to develop the image further and create tonal depth (differences most visible in UV)

Yellow pencil is applied over black pencil in the upper left area and center in areas of flame

Blue pencil is applied at the top center, in the figure’s hat and lower left corner in the figure’s face

Red pencil is applied sparingly in the center in the faces

Charcoal:

Charcoal may have been used throughout, but is difficult to decipher below the fixative layer

Graphite:

Graphite is visible in the lower center area in skulls and, some over the black pencil, in the upper area

Watercolor:

Red watercolor is applied on top of the black pencil in the lower left area in the figure’s legs, and in the LRC.

Scratching:

In face of center figure to highlight facial features

Additional media notes:

Red media, possibly oil paint, is visible in the lower left area (?) and at the lower right side in the blood streaming from figure.

Black wash, charcoal or black pencil may have been added to achieve tonal depth overall

Technical Notes

Composition

Drawing to sheet edges:

Media extends to all edges

Drawing into adjacent sheet:

Drawn lines do not directly extend from one edge to another, thought the sheet closely relates in media type and handling to that in 5E

Composition and media extend above in 4G, some drawn lines continue directly at UR

Composition is artificially extended below into 6F; a few drawn lines correspond when the edges are overlapped (black pencil type differ between the two as well; red water color extends at LLC when edges are overlapped)

Composition extended over to 5G, a few drawn lines extend over edges at lower right edge, in faces

Compositional changes/additions:

The top horizontal member of the cross is drawn over composition, possibly in an attempt to turn the stake into a cross

Artist’s patches:

None

Former restoration:
