Physical Description

Support

Dimensions:

22.5 x 17.0 cm

Cut edge:

Right edge

Paper type:

Cream wove paper, discolored to tan

Pinholes:

Upper corners; possibly upper center area; possibly at right bottom edge that corresponds to pinhole below in 5H at join, though this area is damaged and so difficult to assess

    Additional notes:

Sewing holes:

Edges overlapping adj. sheet:

Bottom (4mm) and right (7mm)

Edges extending below adj. sheet:

Slightly at left edge and top

Edges abutting adj. sheet:

Top (2mm gap between sheets—examine for color media on canvas between gap)

Media

Colored pencil:

Black pencil is used to define the overall composition; applied prior to laying down color media.

Greenish-blue pencil in the waves, does not extend to edge along left side; blue media extends from right edge into 4I; blue media appear to have been applied over the darker black pencil additions

Yellow pencil in the center in the flames

Green pencil in the monstrous figure at LLC and bottom center in figure’s clothing; extends blow join at LLC

Red pencil is used in figure’s hair (?) at center left and at upper left in flag and in ULC (extends into to 4G)

Watercolor:

White gouache appears to have been used to highlight the center figure’s halo/nimbus

Graphite:

Overall, appears to be over the black pencil (?), in the black pencil, most notably in the flames, ship at ULC, ship mast and flag at the center left side, and center figure

Scratching:

Additional media notes:

Colored pencil applied very lightly and with fine detail throughout sheet

Technical Notes

Composition

Drawing to sheet edges:

All edges; color media does not extend below overlapping join along left side

Drawing into adjacent sheet:

The composition (ship smokestack @ center) along left edge corresponds best when the sheet is shifted downward slightly and abutted with 4G

Bird-like creature in LLC in dark black pencil extends from below 5H in graphite media; perhaps acting as a visual linking device

Only one black lines extends directly to 4I, though the red and blue pencil does extend across to 4I in some areas

Compositional changes/additions:

Figure’s outer halos/nimbus appears to have been enlarged, extending outward over the blue pencil; his arm is drawn over with a darker black pencil, slightly enlarging his proper right arm

Composition appears to shift about 1cm to the right in joined position to 5H below
