Drawing Sheet 4-G

Figure Content:

The Temptation of St. Anthony

Sheet Location 4 G

Physical Description

Support

Dimensions:

22.5 x 17.3 cm

Cut edge:

Left edge

Paper type:

Ivory wove paper, discolored to tan

Pinholes:

Difficult to assess due to the fractures in the support, possibly lower right corner and upper left edge (or sewing hole)

    Additional notes:

Sewing holes:

Possibly at left edge, 16.5 cm from top edge

Edges overlapping adj. sheet:

Bottom

Edges extending below adj. sheet:

Slightly at top left edge

Edges abutting adj. sheet:

Right and top

Media

Colored pencil:

Black pencil is used to define the overall composition; at least two types of black pencil were used—one appears very light and the other dark (LRC). Color media is applied over the black pencil, including the darker black pencil additions

Blue pencil applied overall in the waves, does not extend below overlap at right edge and abruptly ends at edge in some areas

Red pencil applied in figure’s hair (?) at center left and in flames in LLC; also lightly at upper left in flag in ships and in URC, extending to 4H

Yellow pencil lightly applied in sun and sunbeam/lightening (?) in upper center and extends accordingly above to 3G; and

Graphite:

Possibly in mast of ship at center right side, which extends into and throughout 4H, and at LRC; and in face in LRC; could light areas of black pencil in the figures possibly be hard pencil???

Watercolor:

Red watercolor added at center-left in figure’s hat and LLC in stake, over black and blue pencil. This media extends downward into 5G

Scratching:

Additional media notes:

Examine/analyze light black media to confirm medium (hard graphite pencil or light black pencil?)

Also possibly black chalk lines, appear powdery

Technical Notes

Composition

Drawing to sheet edges:

Drawing extends to all edges

Drawing into adjacent sheet:

Drawn lines extend best below to 5G at center in head when the edges are abutted and at right when the edges are overlapped; Bird-like/dragon creature in LRC in dark black pencil relates to imagery below in 5G-H in graphite media; perhaps acting as a visual linking device

Center of composition extends over to 4H; drawn lines extend best when the sheet is shifted downward slightly and abutted (smokestack on ship)

Drawn lines do not directly correspond above
