Media

Colored pencil:

Black pencil is used to define the overall composition, particularly in the clouds and is applied over graphite in some areas (figures in bottom area); applied prior to laying down color media

Blue pencil is applied overall in the clouds, in the smoke stacks and in the rays emanating from around Christ

Yellow pencil is faintly visible at the far left side

Charcoal:

Charcoal may have been used to create the lines and rays to the right side, and has a smudged appearance

Graphite:

Graphite is visible below black pencil in the figures in the bottom half of the drawing

Watercolor:

Scratching:

Scratching is visible along Christ’s halo/arch, perhaps to remove pre-existing line during reworking (similar to 3D) ); it is likely that the scratched areas were not visible at the time they were made but became visible after the fixative remaining around these areas discolored

Drawing to sheet edges:

All edges

Drawing into adjacent sheet:

Center canon image extends over into 3G

Compositional changes/additions:

The arches around Christ’s head may have been enlarged to change composition—blue pencil extends only outside/to the right of the scratching as though it were part of an early composition.(similar to 3D)

Additional observations:

Composition may have evolved from the left side sheet initially in charcoal, extending rays and developing the composition across to the right side in graphite and color pencil
