Media

Colored pencil:

Black pencil is used to define the overall composition, particularly in the clouds; applied prior to laying down color media

Blue pencil is applied overall in the clouds and in the rays emanating from around Christ

Yellow pencil is faintly visible at the far right side

Charcoal:

Charcoal may have been used to create the lines and rays to the right side, and has a smudged appearance

Pastel:

Touches of orange-red pastel/pencil are visible in LLC, extending into 4D

Watercolor:

Scratching:

Scratching is visible along Christ’s halo/arch, perhaps to remove pre-existing line during reworking (similar to 3F); it is likely that the scratched areas were not visible at the time they were made but became visible after the fixative remaining around these areas discolored

Composition

Drawing to sheet edges:

All edges

Drawing into adjacent sheet:

Red pastel/pencil and a black pencil lines extend from the LLC into 4D; small faces are used to bridge composition at LRC, but drawn lines do not extend over edges

The clouds along the left side continue into 3C, though the handling of the lines, which are cross hatched and differ from the diagonal parallel lines in 3D; the media is generally similar between the two sheets

Compositional changes/additions:

The arches around Christ’s head may have been enlarged to change composition—blue pencil extends outside/to the right of the scratching as though it relates to part of an early composition. (similar to 3F)

Additionally in the lower right quadrant, a small area of cloud appears to have been enlarged slightly over pre-existing drawing and the hat on the small figure’s head appears to have been added.

Additional observations:

Composition may have evolved from the right side sheet initially in charcoal, extending rays and developing the composition across to the right side in graphite and color pencil
