Media

Colored pencil:

Black pencil is used to define the overall composition; there are two different densities of black medium (one possible conté crayon), possibly applied to develop the image further and strengthen pre-existing drawn lines. The denser/darker black pencil appears to have been used generally for later compositional additions and over colored pencil

Reddish orange pencil is applied over black pencil at the left side and in the figure at the right side

Blue pencil is applied over the black pencil in the background spaces; decorative columns and serpents; and figure slaughtering pig at bottom

Purplish blue pencil is applied over the black pencil in the center background column

Yellow pencil is applied in the column capital, in the saddle of the horse (center), and in the trumpeting horn at LRC

Reddish brown pencil is applied over the black pencil to articulate blood at the bottom left and at the upper center in the masked face’s headdress

Pink (?) pencil is applied in some architectural decoration

Green pencil is applied in the Saint’s halo at the left

Graphite:

Touches of graphite are visible below the black pencil lines along the top edge that corresponds to the drawing above in 5 F

Pastel:

Watercolor:

Red watercolor is applied at the top and bottom edges, extending across into adjacent sheets to accentuate blood

Scratching:

In center-right face between column, to create highlights; also possibly vertical streaks in columns at upper left

Additional media notes:

There is a fractured passage of light orange-yellow gouache in the center upper area.

Technical Notes

Composition

Drawing to sheet edges:

Media extends to all edges

Drawing into adjacent sheet:

Dark black pencil lines at the left top edge along the outer edge of the Saints halo extend directly below over join. A few other black pencil lines appear to correspond above, uniting the composition. At the top right half of the sheet, column capitals and two faces are drawn over the joined edge onto 5G in black pencil and red watercolor

A few dark black pencil lines in shoulder of Saint and lighter black lines in his halo extend over join to the left into 6E; Black shading in shoulder extends over join as well

Black pencil lines and most colored media passages correspond to comp at right in 6H, although only a few diagonal lines at the center edge appear to directly extend across the edges; figure’s blue-colored bottom is not continued across

Black pencil lines and red and green colored pencil generally extend below into 7G over join; most of the remaining composition abruptly transitions. The general composition extends below, though few black pencil lines appear to extend directly over join; the colored pencil passages extend primarily over the joined edges

Compositional changes/additions:

Additions/alterations carried out in denser black medium (conte crayon), in some cases over lighter black and colored pencil:

St. Anthony’s left proper shoulder is drawn over pre-existing drawing of multi-breasted figure (centaur) at lower left side

Figure’s hat, at upper right appears to have been altered in some way (unclear)

Crossbeam at left top edge is drawn over pre-existing drawing of architecture/column capital

Writing in horn at LRC was added in darker black pencil over pre-existing writing

Broader cross-hatching in ULC differs from handling above in 5F—use of visual device to link composition above

Could the face in darker black medium in the center right area between the columns be a later addition?

Artist’s patches:

A small patch was applied to cover the animals genitalia at the lower center-right area

Former restoration:

Triangular loss, 3.0 x 2.0cm in the center
